The recent campaigns to force additional censorship of Hip Hop music are unconstitutional but, also reflect a sad state of affairs in Hip Hop. Never should our rights be stripped away but, let's stop and THINK about the message we convey in our music. Far too often I think we take the impact of what we say in our songs for granted, if the music is moving people to try and place limits on what can be said...the music has a substantial reach.
So consider, if you would, using your music like a knife...it can be a defensive tool, a service piece for a meal, a show piece and many more things. When you hand a knife to someone there is a right and wrong way to do it, you teach kids proper safety in regards to knives in the home and if you care properly for your knives they give you years of service. Use a knife the wrong way and injury can occur (to you and others) and we already have laws in place to punish you we you use a knife in an unlawful manner (so no new rules required). So now with music as your knife, how responsible are you going to be?
You can do what you like within the law, law is not meant to regulate morals. I strongly suggest the all people try to do things in an upright and positive manner but, let's be realistic there are going to be some people who really do not care one way or another how they affect the next individual. If they don't break the law then you just have to deal with it by limiting your exposure, turn it off, provide alternatives and/or try to influence them to do things differently. By no means should a law be drafted or modified that takes away the constutional rights of any group or individual simply because another doesn't like how they deliver a message or what that message is.
Something to think about next time YOU don't fit the MOLD,
